Gardening Tips for December

December might be a quieter month in the garden, but there’s still plenty you can do to prepare for the year ahead and keep your outdoor space in great shape. With frost and shorter days becoming the norm, focus on winter-proofing your garden and planning for spring. Protect tender plants by wrapping them in horticultural fleece or moving pots to sheltered spots. Keep on top of clearing fallen leaves to prevent pests and diseases, and ensure paths and patios are safe from slippery build-up. This is also a great time to prune dormant trees and shrubs, such as apple and pear trees, while resisting the urge to prune spring-flowering varieties. If you enjoy growing vegetables, plant garlic and onions in well-drained soil or pots for a head start. Don’t forget to feed the birds by providing high-energy food and fresh water—it’s a small act that makes a big difference during the cold months. Finally, use these quieter days to clean and sharpen tools, tidy the shed, and plan your planting schemes for the new year. A little preparation now will ensure a garden that thrives well into the seasons ahead.
